July 10th – October 17th 2021
They are a well-known and appreciated duo in literary Holland: illustrator Olivia Ettema and writer Franca Treur. In 2014 NRC asked Ettema to illustrate an ultra-short story by Treur for the Achterpagina and since then they have published illustrated stories together in NRC Handelsblad, nrc.next and Trouw.
The exhibition shows Ettema’s work in this collaboration: original sketches and illustrations, lino and stencil prints. In a short film Treur and Ettema talk about their work. In the spaces Ettema draws, a psychological game is clearly being played, as evidenced by the dark shadows, the attitudes of the characters and the direction of their gaze. Fronique Oosterhof, director of GRID: “Ettema’s work shows how fresh and contemporary the application of analogue printing techniques can be. This exhibition therefore fits perfectly with our mission to keep the intangible graphic heritage alive.”
This exhibition is a production of House of the Book, The Hague. There it was on view under the title ‘Franca Treur and Olivia Ettema, five years of collaboration’ from 6 April to 16 June 2019.
During the exhibition period GRID organises a peripheral programme with, among other things, workshops for adults and children, related to the exhibition. Please check our agenda for current information.
